Free Subnetting Lesson - 3

Subnetting Lesson 3

How did you get along with writing out the Subnetting Secrets Cheat
Sheet?  It should only take a few goes to be able to write it out from
memory.  That is actually the question half answered already would you
believe.

Still here?  You must really want to learn subnetting.

Lets jump into another subnetting question.  Still a nice easy one for
you but then again, when you use the Subnetting Secrets method there is
no such thing anymore as a hard subnetting question anymore.  You simply
tick the boxes and get the answer.

Which subnet is host 200.200.9.124/28 in?

Write out a Subnetting Cheat Sheet by hand.

Step 1 - We want to turn that /28 into a subnet mask.  We know that
this is another Class C address because it starts with 200.  We also
know that the mask has 28 bits in so write out up to 24 bits:

255.255.255 is 24 bits and we need to add 4 to get to 28.  Tick down
4 places on the upper left column.

128
192
224
240
248
252
254
255

We get 240 for the last octet so our mask is 255.255.255.240

Step 2 - tick across the top row 4 places to get our subnet increment.

128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1

Our subnets are going up in increments of 16 and our host number is
124 because we are subnetting on the last octet.

Step 3 - write out the subnets until you hit the one the host is in.

200.200.9.0 not in this one so add 16
200.200.9.16 not in this one so add 16
200.200.9.32 not in this one so add 16
200.200.9.48 not in this one so add 16
200.200.9.64 not in this one so add 16
200.200.9.80 not in this one so add 16
200.200.9.96 not in this one so add 16
200.200.9.112 YES.  Host 124 is in here
200.200.9.128

The answer is 200.200.9.112.

We will have a harder question tomorrow.  If you can't wait
until then Paul please rush over to the below link

lots more examples in there where I hold you hand and walk
you through more examples than you will ever need.
